President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of 65 ambassadors and high commissioners, including both career diplomats and political appointees, to various countries and the United Nations. Among the notable non-career postings, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has been assigned to Germany, while presidential aide Reno Omokri will represent Nigeria in Mexico.
The announcement, signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, details that 34 non-career and 31 career diplomats were included in this round of postings. High-profile assignments include former Katsina State Governor Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau to Beijing (China), Senator Jimoh Ibrahim to the UN, Senator Ita Enang to South Africa, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to Spain, and former Health Minister Prof. Isaac Adewole to Canada.
Other prominent appointments include Senator Grace Bent to Togo, former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to Greece, Aminu Dalhatu to the United Kingdom, and former Director-General of the NIA, Ayodele Oke, to France. Several other envoys have been posted to countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has received agrément from the UK and France for Aminu Dalhatu and Ayodele Oke, respectively, while requests have been submitted to the remaining host countries in accordance with diplomatic procedures.
Following their Senate confirmation in December 2025, the ambassadors-designate will undergo an induction programme before assuming their duties. This posting comes nearly six years after the last major ambassadorial appointments in 2017, filling gaps that have left some Nigerian missions without substantive leadership.
President Tinubu has directed that the induction programme start immediately, marking a new chapter for Nigeria’s diplomatic corps and reinforcing the country’s presence in over 100 nations worldwide.
