The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised Godswill Akpabio, President of the Nigerian Senate, accusing him of weakening Nigeria’s democratic and ethical standards through the passage of the Electoral Act 2026.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC condemned certain provisions in the amended law, arguing that they were designed to protect dishonesty, weaken opposition parties, and reduce public trust in the country’s democratic system.
Akpabio Defends Electoral Law
The criticism followed remarks by Akpabio during a reception for Remi Tinubu, wife of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
At the event, the Senate President reportedly dismissed objections raised by opposition parties over the Electoral Act 2026, stating that their criticism only confirmed that the National Assembly had enacted the right legislation.
However, the ADC insisted that history would judge Akpabio harshly for supporting a law it believes undermines Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
Dispute Over Certificate Forgery Clause
The opposition party expressed particular concern over a provision in the new electoral law which, according to it, removes certificate forgery as a valid ground for challenging election results.
The ADC argued that the provision contradicts sections 66, 107, 137, and 182 of the Nigerian Constitution, which disqualify individuals who submit forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from holding public office.
According to the party, such a change creates a serious constitutional conflict and sends the wrong message about accountability in public office.
‘Dangerous Signal to Nigerians’
In its statement, the ADC described the amendment as a troubling development that could erode public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
The party also criticised lawmakers who supported the legislation, arguing that laws should strengthen ethical standards rather than weaken them.
It warned that removing strict consequences for offences such as certificate forgery could reinforce the perception that corruption is tolerated in Nigeria’s political system.
Party Reaffirms Commitment to Opposition Politics
Despite the controversy surrounding the Electoral Act, the ADC said it remains focused on building a credible political alternative for Nigerians.
The party stated that it would continue working toward restoring integrity, competence, and accountability in governance.
It added that future assessments of Nigeria’s democratic journey would distinguish between those who defended democratic principles and those who weakened them.
