Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a former councillor in **Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, over alleged involvement in illegal drug trafficking.
The suspect, Sheleru Olalekan, 45, who previously served two terms representing the Orimedu community and currently works as a legislative aide, was arrested on March 2, 2026, at his residence in Ilado, Ibeju-Lekki.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, operatives recovered 40 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, during a search of the suspect’s home.
Babafemi disclosed that the drugs were found in one of the rooms in Olalekan’s house. During interrogation, the former councillor reportedly admitted that the drugs and the property where they were discovered belonged to him.
Drugs Hidden in Baby Diapers Intercepted in Abuja
In a separate operation in the Federal Capital Territory, NDLEA officers on March 3 intercepted a 32-year-old businessman, Emeka Hyginus Okwor, while travelling from Enugu State to Zuba, Abuja.
A search of his luggage uncovered 1,000 pills of tapentadol (250mg) hidden inside baby diapers. Investigators said the suspect confessed he was transporting the drugs to Guduwa village in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, where he runs a provision shop.
Synthetic Cannabis Seized in Kogi
On the same day, NDLEA patrol officers along the Kabba–Obajana highway in Kogi State intercepted a package containing 1.55kg of Colorado, a synthetic cannabis variant. The drugs were hidden inside a standing fan carton belonging to Mey Ali Muhamat, a 36-year-old Cameroonian from Maroua, Cameroon.
Authorities said Muhamat was travelling in a commercial bus from Lagos to Cameroon via Lokoja, Kano and Maiduguri when he was apprehended.
Explosive Device Components Recovered in Niger State
In Niger State, NDLEA operatives on March 4 intercepted a commercial bus along the Mokwa–Jebba road carrying a sack containing 500 pieces of improvised explosive device (IED) components.
A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the alleged recipient, Osama Abdullahi, 21, in Pelegi, Mashegu Local Government Area.
More Arrests Across Nigeria
Further operations carried out in several states led to additional drug seizures and arrests.
In Adamawa State, NDLEA operatives in Yola recovered 122,000 tramadol pills and 700 grams of methamphetamine concealed in a truck transporting 2,000 cartons of local drinks.
Similarly, officers in Kano State arrested Muhammed Ali, 20, on March 3 with 11,283 tramadol pills at Gadar Tamburawa.
In Ogun State, two suspects — Nazifi Mudansir and Kabiru Musa — were apprehended in Ogere with 46kg of skunk.
Meanwhile, in Delta State, officers arrested Joy Chukwuma, 25, and Eugene Felix, 22, in Ogwashi-Uku with 18.63kg of skunk, 10.8 litres of codeine syrup, and 4,268 pills of tramadol and swinol.
NDLEA Destroys Drug Farms in Edo
NDLEA operatives also destroyed 1,910.25kg of skunk on two cannabis farms located in Egbisi forest in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State.
Two suspects, Eke London, 48, and Austin Isusi, 49, were arrested at the site, while another suspect, Alaba Adeboye, 47, was apprehended in Ikhin town with 176.5kg of skunk.
NDLEA Intensifies Anti-Drug Campaign
The agency said its commands across the country also intensified the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) awareness campaign in schools and communities. Sensitisation programmes were conducted in secondary schools across Oyo, Niger, Zamfara, Lagos, Sokoto, Ebonyi, and Anambra states.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers in Lagos, FCT, Kano, Niger, Kogi, Edo, Ogun, Delta and Adamawa for the successful operations and urged them to sustain the agency’s balanced approach to drug control nationwide.
