A woman has died while six others sustained serious injuries following a road accident early Sunday at New Castle Bus Stop along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos State.
The fatal crash involved a commercial Volkswagen bus that reportedly lost control and struck a roadside culvert before ejecting one of its passengers onto the expressway.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred early Sunday morning.
Passenger Crushed by Oncoming Truck
Taofiq explained that the impact of the collision forced a female passenger out of the vehicle onto the road. Moments later, an approaching articulated truck ran over the victim, killing her instantly.
“The impact forcefully ejected a female passenger onto the expressway, while six others sustained serious injuries including multiple fractures,” he said.
He added that the truck driver fled the scene after the accident.
Emergency Response and Rescue
Officials of LASTMA immediately activated emergency traffic management procedures, temporarily closing the affected section of the road to allow rescue operations.
Personnel from the Pedro Police Division assisted in maintaining order at the scene while emergency responders carried out evacuation efforts.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service transported the six injured passengers, including the driver of the bus, to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the body of the deceased woman.
Following the rescue operation, traffic officials cleared the damaged vehicle and restored normal traffic flow along the busy highway.
LASTMA Condoles With Victim’s Family
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.
Earlier Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
The accident occurred hours after another crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Arepo Bridge, where two people were injured in a collision involving two trucks.
The early morning crash caused heavy traffic congestion before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) cleared the vehicles from the road.
