Wolfsburg Sack Coach Ralph Bauer as Relegation Threat Grows in Bundesliga

German Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg have dismissed head coach Daniel Bauer as the club struggles near the bottom of the league table and faces the risk of relegation from the top flight for the first time.

The decision was announced on Sunday following Wolfsburg’s 2–1 home defeat to Hamburger SV on Saturday, a result that further deepened the club’s relegation worries.

Bauer had been appointed on an interim basis after the club parted ways with former coach Paul Simonis in November. He initially made a promising start, winning three of his first seven matches in charge. However, Wolfsburg’s form declined sharply afterwards, with the team managing only two points from their last eight games.

The poor run of results has left Wolfsburg second from bottom in the Bundesliga standings.

Hecking Linked With Return

Reports in German media suggest that experienced manager Dieter Hecking could return to take charge of the struggling club. Hecking previously enjoyed success with Wolfsburg, leading the team to victory in the DFB-Pokal in 2015 and finishing second in the Bundesliga that same season.

Wolfsburg, which is owned by the German automobile giant Volkswagen, has never been relegated since gaining promotion to Germany’s top division in 1997.

The club currently sits two points behind Werder Bremen, who occupy the relegation playoff spot, leaving Wolfsburg with little margin for error in the remaining fixtures of the season.
