The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into an incident involving officers from Kemta Police Station in Abeokuta and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to a statement released on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a detailed probe.
“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the incident that occurred at Government Technical College involving officers from Kemta Police Station. The matter has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation,” the statement said.
The command explained that the investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that due process is followed, with sanctions applied where necessary.
Police authorities also emphasised that they would work closely with the NSCDC to determine what actually happened and prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The Command will, in collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, examine the circumstances surrounding the incident exhaustively to ensure due process is followed with a view to applying sanctions where appropriate,” the statement added.
The police further reassured residents that security agencies operating in the state maintain cordial and cooperative relationships in the interest of public safety.
The development comes after a viral video on social media alleged that police officers assaulted a civil defence operative at Government Technical College, Abeokuta, and fired tear gas within the school premises.
Reports circulating online claimed the incident occurred on March 5, following a dispute involving a carwash operator who was accused of injuring a student but was reportedly released by the police despite complaints.
Eyewitnesses alleged that tensions escalated when students confronted the suspect, prompting the intervention of the Divisional Police Officer from Kemta Police Station. During the confrontation, a civil defence officer who attempted to intervene was reportedly assaulted.
Some witnesses also claimed that tear gas was fired into the school compound, causing panic among students and teachers, while phones belonging to teachers and the civil defence officer were allegedly confiscated.
The incident has sparked public outrage online, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
