The Rivers State House of Assembly has cleared five out of nine commissioner-nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while rejecting four, including a professor, after a rigorous screening process on Monday.
Speaker Martin Amaewhule, who presided over the plenary, explained that the nominees were rejected due to poor performance during the screening and issues raised in petitions surrounding their nominations.
He said:
“At the end of the screening exercise, the House has confirmed five of them. Four others are not adequately prepared to serve Rivers State and have not demonstrated readiness to occupy the offices intended for them.”
The approved commissioner-designates are: Tonye Belgam, Prof. Temple Nwafor, Dr Peters Nwagor, Lekue Kenneth, and Amarigha Edward-Hart.
Those rejected include Prof. Datonye Alasia, Barr. Tamuno Williams, Otonye Amachree, and Charity Deemua.
Following the decision, the Speaker announced that the Assembly would forward a letter to the governor recommending that the five cleared nominees be sworn in promptly.
The House adjourned plenary to Tuesday, March 17, 2026, for further proceedings.
