The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), has summoned the nation’s Service Chiefs to an urgent meeting following recent attacks on military bases in the North-East.
The crucial meeting is currently holding at the Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, where top military and intelligence officials are reviewing the security situation in the region.
Among those attending the meeting are the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.
Also present are the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abass, as well as representatives of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).
Rising Casualties in the North-East
The meeting follows a series of deadly attacks by terrorists targeting military formations in Borno State.
Reports indicate that no fewer than three Commanding Officers holding the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel were recently killed during the attacks.
In addition to the officers, several soldiers were also killed, while hundreds of civilians abducted by terrorists remain in captivity.
Strategy Review Underway
Speaking briefly before the meeting went into a closed-door session, the Defence Minister said the military leadership would review operational strategies in response to the evolving threats.
According to him, despite the losses recorded by security forces, terrorist groups have also suffered significant casualties.
“We know we have recorded some casualties but it is more on the side of terrorists,” the retired four-star general said.
The meeting is expected to examine new tactical approaches to counter terrorism in the North-East, as the military intensifies efforts to restore security and protect civilian communities.
