Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and ex-Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Tambuwal announced his decision in a statement shared on X early Thursday, revealing that he had already submitted a formal resignation letter to his ward chairman before registering with the ADC alongside his supporters and political allies.
According to him, the prolonged internal crisis within the PDP, including leadership disputes and widening divisions among party members, influenced his decision to leave the party.
He acknowledged that the PDP played a major role in shaping his political journey, which saw him serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives and later complete two terms as Governor of Sokoto State.
However, Tambuwal said the internal challenges facing the party have weakened its unity and direction, making it difficult for him to remain.
He explained that his decision to join the ADC was based on his belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform focused on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and national development.
Tambuwal reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values, justice, and national unity, adding that he hopes the ADC will provide a credible platform for political engagement.
His defection comes amid a wave of high-profile moves to the party, including that of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, a development analysts say could strengthen the ADC’s position as a growing opposition force ahead of the next electoral cycle.
