The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the nationwide deployment of personnel and logistics for the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr special patrol operations, scheduled to run from March 17 to March 22, 2026.
The directive was issued by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as part of efforts to ensure safe travel for motorists during the festive period.
In a statement released by the Corps Public Education Officer, Felicia Kalu, the FRSC boss said the operation aligns with the corps’ statutory responsibility to promote safer road use across Nigeria.
According to him, the special patrol is aimed at reducing road traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries, while ensuring the free flow of traffic on major highways nationwide.
Mohammed explained that the operation would feature increased patrol visibility, strategic deployment of rescue teams and intensified public enlightenment campaigns to guide motorists and other road users during the Sallah celebrations.
He noted that the Eid al-Fitr celebrations usually witness a surge in vehicular movement across the country as Muslim faithful travel to celebrate with family and loved ones.
To manage the expected traffic increase, the FRSC said it had mobilised operational assets to prevent avoidable crashes often caused by speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, use of mobile phones while driving, route violations and other traffic offences.
The corps also disclosed that it would maintain 24-hour patrol operations along critical road corridors nationwide, supported by standby rescue teams, ambulances, tow trucks, patrol vehicles and motorbikes to ensure rapid response to emergencies.
The operation will also focus on the immediate removal of road obstructions and close monitoring of traffic conditions to minimise delays for road users.
According to the FRSC, strict enforcement will target major traffic violations including excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, tyre violations, lane indiscipline, road obstruction, overloading, mix-loading of passengers and goods, seat-belt violations and the use of mechanically deficient vehicles.
The enforcement efforts will be complemented by public enlightenment campaigns aimed at encouraging voluntary compliance with traffic rules.
Mohammed further stated that commanding officers across sectors have been directed to ensure the full deployment of operational equipment such as patrol vehicles, advanced life support ambulances, tow trucks, radar guns, breathalysers, traffic cones, patrol bikes and communication gadgets.
He added that Special Marshals would actively participate in traffic control operations across various commands during the patrol period.
The FRSC also disclosed that it would collaborate closely with other security and emergency agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service and the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency to ensure quick response to emergencies on the highways.
In addition, the corps will utilise National Traffic Radio 107.1FM to provide real-time traffic updates, travel advisories and alternative route guidance for motorists during the operation.
Members of the public were also encouraged to report crashes, traffic obstructions or emergencies through the FRSC emergency toll-free number 122 or 0700-CALL-FRSC.
