The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has scheduled May 23 for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This was disclosed in a statement by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s Interim National Chairman, following a statutory NEC meeting observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
According to the timetable approved by the party, other primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly will take place on May 15. The party also set April 15 as the deadline for submitting its membership register to INEC.
As part of its internal activities, the Labour Party has slated its national convention for April 11, while ward, local government, and state congresses are expected to hold on March 26, March 28, and March 31, respectively.
The NEC also addressed recent developments within the party, including an alleged invasion of its national secretariat by suspected hoodlums. Following recommendations from its Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, some members have been suspended over alleged misconduct and anti-party activities.
In addition, the council approved the expansion of the party’s membership register through a combination of digital and manual registration processes to improve transparency and participation.
The NEC further resolved that vacant positions within the party structure would be filled with interim appointments pending the conduct of proper congresses. Members were also encouraged to resolve disputes internally to promote unity.
The council reaffirmed its support for the leadership of Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, following a Federal High Court ruling, and passed a vote of confidence in the party’s leadership and key stakeholders.
