Shettima arrives Lagos to brief Tinubu on Maiduguri situation

Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Lagos to brief President Bola Tinubu on the security situation in Maiduguri following a recent wave of deadly attacks.

Shettima’s visit comes in the aftermath of coordinated suicide bombings that struck multiple locations in Maiduguri last Monday, leaving at least 23 people dead and more than 100 others injured. The attacks targeted the popular Monday Market, the Post Office Flyover, and a security checkpoint at the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

In a statement shared via his verified X account, the Vice President explained that his trip to Maiduguri was directed by the President. The visit was aimed at engaging with families and communities affected by the tragic incidents, as well as conducting an on-the-ground assessment of the situation.

Following this visit, Shettima is expected to present a detailed report to President Tinubu, outlining his findings and recommendations on the security challenges in the region. He is also scheduled to lead a delegation of serving governors on a Sallah homage to the President.

During his visit to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where many victims are receiving treatment, Shettima strongly condemned the attacks, describing them as “barbaric.” He emphasized that no justification—whether religious or otherwise—can excuse the killing of innocent civilians.

The Vice President assured victims and their families of the Federal Government’s continued support through agencies such as the National Emergency Management Agency, the North East Development Commission, and the Borno State Government.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to restoring peace, Shettima vowed that those responsible for the attacks would be decisively dealt with. He stressed that authorities would not relent until stability is fully restored in Borno State, the Northeast, and across Nigeria.
