Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, have successfully foiled coordinated kidnapping attempts in Akure, the Ondo State capital, rescuing five victims abducted at different locations on Friday night.
The incidents, which heightened tension across parts of the state capital, occurred in two separate areas, with one of the attacks targeting a Primary Health Centre in the Oke-Ijebu axis of Akure. During the operation, three health workers who were on night duty at the facility were forcefully taken away by armed kidnappers.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the attackers stormed the health centre under the cover of darkness, creating panic in the area before whisking the victims to an unknown destination. The swift response of Amotekun operatives, however, proved decisive, as intelligence gathering and coordinated tracking led to the discovery of the kidnappers’ hideout.
Confirming the development, the Corps Commander of Amotekun in Ondo State, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed in an official statement made available to journalists that the victims were rescued after a carefully executed operation by the agency.
In a related incident, Adeleye further revealed that a 45-year-old man and his 15-year-old son were abducted at Pelebe, along Oda Road in Akure, between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the same Friday night. The father and son were reportedly ambushed by the kidnappers, who attempted to move them out of the area before security operatives intervened.
According to the Amotekun commander, the corps’ Rapid Response Squad swung into action immediately after receiving distress calls, launching a manhunt for the perpetrators. The operation, which lasted several hours and involved intense confrontation with the kidnappers, culminated in the successful rescue of the victims at about 1:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Adeleye noted that the rescued victims were found in distress but alive, and were promptly attended to by medical personnel. He added that the three health workers abducted from the Oke-Ijebu Primary Health Centre have since regained their freedom and are currently receiving treatment at an Amotekun medical facility, where their condition is being closely monitored.
While details about the kidnappers remain sketchy, the corps commander assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all those involved in the criminal acts, emphasizing that the agency remains resolute in its mandate to rid the state of insecurity.
He reiterated that the Ondo State Government places a high premium on the safety of lives and property, and will continue to support security agencies with the necessary resources to combat crime effectively.
Adeleye also used the opportunity to call on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing timely, credible, and actionable information. He stressed that community participation is crucial in the fight against kidnapping and other forms of criminality.
