Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed
Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has revealed that he is in the final stages of consultations to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress, with a formal declaration expected on Thursday.
The governor disclosed this on Monday shortly after a closed-door meeting in Bauchi with a delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
Mohammed, who also serves as Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, expressed appreciation to the ADC leadership for their support, noting that his decision followed several unsuccessful attempts to resolve internal crises within the PDP.
According to him, all reconciliation efforts proved futile despite extensive engagements, adding that mounting pressure from his supporters also influenced his decision.
He explained that committees were established both in Abuja and Bauchi to evaluate possible political options, including a move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), but those efforts did not materialize.
The governor lamented that it had become clear he could no longer remain in a party where he felt unwelcome, stressing the need to align with a political platform that reflects his aspirations within the opposition.
Mohammed further alleged that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, played a role in frustrating reconciliation moves within the PDP and also hindered attempts to facilitate his entry into the APC.
He added that despite holding multiple meetings with Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a bid to resolve the crisis, no meaningful progress was achieved.
Describing the ADC as a viable alternative, Mohammed said ongoing discussions with the party have been productive and are nearing completion, with all arrangements expected to be finalized soon.
He emphasized the urgency of the timeline, stating that decisions must be concluded quickly to enable a united political front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Reiterating his political ideology, the governor maintained that he has always operated effectively within the opposition and remains committed to that path moving forward.
Earlier, Babachir Lawal disclosed that the delegation was mandated by ADC National Chairman, David Mark, to engage Mohammed as part of broader consultations aimed at strengthening opposition unity ahead of 2027.
Lawal noted that the governor’s potential defection would significantly boost the ADC, describing him as a strong and courageous political figure capable of contributing meaningfully to the party’s growth.
