Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, confirmed on Monday that the Israeli military has commenced a ground offensive in Lebanon as tensions in the region continue to escalate.
According to remarks reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and carried by the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Katz disclosed that Israeli troops had begun a ground maneuver aimed at removing security threats along the northern border.
“The IDF has begun a ground maneuver in Lebanon to remove threats and protect the residents of the Galilee and the north,” Katz said during a situational assessment at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv.
He added that hundreds of thousands of residents of southern Lebanon who have evacuated or are in the process of leaving their homes would not be allowed to return to areas south of the Litani River.
Katz further revealed that the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had directed the military to dismantle what he described as “militant infrastructure” located in Lebanese villages near the border.
The development marks a significant escalation in the conflict along the Israel–Lebanon frontier, raising concerns about broader regional instability.
