A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over his failure to appear in court.
The order was given on Thursday by Justice Peter Kekemeke after the defendant repeatedly failed to respond to a one-count charge filed against him by the Nigeria Police Force.
According to court documents, Turaki is accused of providing false information to the police in a petition he submitted in 2022.
The charge, marked FCT/HC/CR/647/25, states that the alleged offence is punishable under Section 140 of the Penal Code Law.
The prosecution, led by Usman Rabiu, had urged the court to invoke provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 to compel Turaki’s appearance, citing his repeated absence despite being duly notified.
Justice Kekemeke ruled that there was no valid justification for his failure to appear and consequently ordered his arrest and production in court for arraignment.
The case was initially before Justice K. N. Ogbonnaya but was reassigned after Turaki petitioned the Chief Judge, expressing lack of confidence in the handling of the matter.
However, at the resumed hearing, the court expressed dissatisfaction over his continued absence, prompting the issuance of the bench warrant.
