The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed that a suspected child theft attempt was foiled in Ogbagi Akoko, following swift action by a vigilant woman and community members.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, the incident occurred on March 22, 2026, after a report by a resident, Mrs. Olanireti.
According to the police, the woman had sent her three-year-old son to his grandmother when a concerned resident noticed suspicious movements involving the child and raised an alarm.
The suspects, identified as Adefarati Idowu and Adepoju Babatunde, were allegedly attempting to escape with the child on an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle when they were intercepted.
The child’s grandmother, Mrs. Olawale, reportedly acted quickly by holding onto the motorcycle, preventing the suspects from fleeing.
Other residents joined in, blocking escape routes and helping to apprehend the suspects before they could get away. The child was rescued unharmed.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, praised the community’s swift response, noting that such cooperation is vital in tackling crime.
Authorities confirmed that the case has been transferred for further investigation, with efforts ongoing to determine whether the suspects are linked to a wider criminal network.
The police also urged parents and guardians to remain alert and encouraged the public to report suspicious activities promptly.
