President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed condolences to the family of former Nigeria national football team midfielder Henry Onyemanze Nwosu, who died on Saturday at the age of 62.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu joined the Nigerian football community in mourning the late football legend.
The President described Nwosu as an exceptionally skilled player whose artistry on the pitch left a lasting impact on Nigerian football.
The statement also recalled Nwosu’s early brilliance with the national team, particularly his performance as a 17-year-old in the then-Green Eagles squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.
According to the presidency, Nwosu served the country for more than a decade with the national team, participating in subsequent AFCON tournaments in 1982, 1984 and 1988, while also contributing to the development of football in Nigeria.
Tinubu noted that Nigerians would always remember the late playmaker for the pride and joy he brought to the nation and for inspiring many young players to pursue success in football.
The President prayed for the repose of the late footballer’s soul and asked God to grant comfort to his family and loved ones.
The death of the former international was earlier announced by his former teammate and fellow 1980 AFCON winner, Segun Odegbami, who revealed that Nwosu died around 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after spending several days in intensive care.
