The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has ordered an immediate forensic investigation into a shooting incident in Osogbo, Osun State, which resulted in the death of a civilian.
The directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Force spokesperson, Okon Placid.
According to the statement, the police acknowledged growing public interest in the incident as well as a recent statement released by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) regarding the matter.
The police noted that while the NCS has statutory responsibilities in anti-smuggling operations, the protection of human life remains the highest priority of the state.
The statement added that the Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police, had taken note of the NCS’s call for a harmonised investigation. It explained that the police would collaborate with the customs service in the probe currently being handled by the Osun State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
According to the police, the investigation will be conducted with a high level of forensic diligence to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
The statement disclosed that two suspects, identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, remain in custody to assist in the investigation.
Recovered exhibits, including a Beretta pistol (Breech No. 125024) and 9mm ballistic evidence, are currently undergoing specialised forensic analysis to determine the circumstances of the shooting in line with operational rules of engagement.
The police also reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service maintain a strong professional relationship, stressing that the incident should not be interpreted as a conflict between the two security agencies.
The Force urged the public to avoid sensationalising the case, noting that both institutions remain united in the pursuit of justice for the deceased.
The police further extended condolences to the family of the victim and assured them that the investigation would be concluded in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
