The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Abia State, Ngozi Ezeoma, has confirmed a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of a tricycle operator and his female passenger in Umuahia.
The crash occurred on Tuesday at the well-known “Sign Board” junction near Ubani Market in Umuahia. According to Ezeoma, the incident is particularly heartbreaking as it came just hours after another deadly accident along Opobo Road in Aba, where a motorcyclist lost his life after being hit and subsequently crushed by a truck.
Ezeoma described the latest crash as both tragic and alarming, noting that the same junction has recorded multiple fatal accidents in recent times. She revealed that at least three similar incidents occurred at the location in 2025 alone, leading to several deaths.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that a speeding truck rammed into the tricycle along the Umuahia-Ubani-Uzuakoli Road, dragging it beneath the vehicle and killing both occupants instantly. The truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash.
The FRSC boss renewed calls for strict adherence to traffic regulations, especially among drivers of heavy-duty vehicles and tricycles. She stressed the importance of avoiding excessive speed and exercising caution at high-risk junctions.
“The loss of lives in such avoidable circumstances is deeply concerning,” she said, urging road users to prioritise safety at all times.
The bodies of the victims have been deposited in a morgue in Umuahia, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing driver.
