Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly attacked and overrun a military base in Borno State, killing the commanding officer and several other officers.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday in Kukawa Local Government Area of the state.
According to a local source, the insurgents stormed the community around 12:30 a.m., approaching the military facility from different directions before launching a coordinated assault on the camp.
Another security source disclosed that the attackers forced soldiers to retreat from the base, set military vehicles on fire, and made away with weapons and ammunition.
The source added that the commanding officer of the unit was among those killed during the attack.
While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, security officials described the incident as a significant loss.
Just last month, the same military base came under attack by insurgents, but troops successfully repelled the assault and reportedly killed several terrorists.
The soldiers’ response at the time earned praise from residents of the community, and the commanding officer was widely commended, particularly on social media.
The lawmaker representing Kukawa Local Government Area in the Borno State House of Assembly, Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, had also visited and celebrated the troops for their bravery.
Reacting to the latest incident, the lawmaker expressed sadness that the military camp was eventually overrun.
The attack follows another recent assault by terrorists on a military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe town, located in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, where several soldiers and civilians were reportedly killed.
