Residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have been thrown into fear following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that left one person dead and others injured on Monday morning.
The Kwara State Government confirmed the incident, describing it as a troubling development in an area already facing security concerns.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, the explosion occurred when a vehicle unknowingly ran over the planted device along a road outside the community.
He explained that the blast claimed the life of a male occupant instantly, while a woman and her child who were also in the vehicle were affected. The woman sustained injuries and has been taken to a hospital, where she is reportedly responding to treatment, while the child escaped without harm.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents, many of whom are already grappling with insecurity in the region.
Also confirming the development, ZulQharnain Shero Musa, Special Assistant on Media to the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, stated that the explosion resulted in casualties, although the exact number is yet to be fully determined.
He added that initial investigations suggest the explosive device may have been planted by suspected insurgents, raising fresh concerns about the spread of such threats in the area.
Authorities are expected to intensify security measures and investigations to prevent further incidents and restore calm to affected communities.
