Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, on Wednesday staged a protest in Osogbo, Osun State, over persistent poor electricity supply across the region.
The students, who gathered at the November 27 Bridge, expressed frustration over inadequate power on campuses of tertiary institutions, calling for urgent government intervention. They carried placards with messages demanding improved electricity output, stable supply, and opposition to tariff increases.
Speaking during the protest, NANS Southwest Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, said the association was deeply concerned about the impact of erratic electricity on academic activities and student welfare.
He noted that while the government’s efforts to stabilise the country are acknowledged, access to reliable electricity remains a fundamental necessity that must not be overlooked. According to him, the worsening power situation has disrupted learning and daily life on campuses.
Adeyemo warned that failure by relevant authorities to address the issue promptly could lead to further mass protests, stressing that students would continue to press their demands until meaningful action is taken.
He also linked the importance of improved governance to broader national challenges, including security concerns, citing recent violent incidents in parts of the country.
Meanwhile, residents of Osogbo have similarly protested at the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company office, issuing a seven-day ultimatum for improved service and restoration of affected communities to Band A power supply.
