Former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has tipped Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, while identifying Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as favourites for this season’s UEFA Champions League title.

Okocha made his predictions during an interview with French media outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City.

The Nigerian football legend acknowledged that the race for the prestigious individual award remains highly competitive, with several top players hoping to emerge victorious.

Among the contenders he mentioned were England striker Harry Kane, Mbappé, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal and players from Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite the competition, Okocha believes Mbappé has done enough to deserve the award, pointing to his impressive goalscoring record across major competitions.

“The suspense is more exciting than ever,” Okocha said, noting that there are “a good half-dozen contenders” in the race for football’s biggest individual honour.

He, however, argued that Mbappé’s achievements make him a worthy candidate, highlighting the forward’s reported ten goals at the World Cup, fifteen in the Champions League and twenty-five in the Spanish league.

According to Okocha, these scoring numbers strengthen Mbappé’s claim to the 2026 Ballon d’Or, although the competition remains open.

Meanwhile, the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder has identified Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as the clubs he considers best placed to challenge for Champions League glory.

Okocha highlighted Manchester City’s substantial spending during the summer transfer window, suggesting that the club’s investment could boost its chances of securing the European title.

He also praised Barcelona’s impressive performances at the beginning of the season, describing the Spanish giants as a serious contender.

For Bayern Munich, Okocha pointed to the club’s ability to retain key players, suggesting that maintaining squad strength could prove crucial in its pursuit of continental success.

His comments come as Europe’s leading clubs continue their campaigns, with attention increasingly focused on the teams capable of progressing to the latter stages of the competition.

The forthcoming encounter between Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City will offer another opportunity to assess the ambitions of two major European sides.

With Mbappé leading Okocha’s personal Ballon d’Or selection and three clubs emerging as his Champions League favourites, the Nigerian icon has added his voice to the growing debate over who will dominate European football this season.
