Fear and confusion spread across parts of Edo North Senatorial District on Thursday following reports of alleged kidnappers invading schools, causing some institutions to temporarily shut down as worried parents rushed to pick up their children.
The reports created tension in several communities, with claims circulating that suspected criminals had targeted schools including St. James Grammar School in Afuze, Owan East LGA, and Holy Trinity Grammar School in Sabogida Ora, Owan West LGA.
Similar concerns were also reported in Auchi, Aviele, Agbede in Etsako West LGAs, as well as Iruekpen and Ekpoma in Esan West LGAs. The situation was heightened after videos circulated on social media showing students running out of Holy Trinity Grammar School, with claims that kidnappers had entered the premises and abducted some students.
In Aviele, separate reports also alleged that a man and some children were kidnapped by gunmen, increasing anxiety among residents and parents in nearby communities.
However, school authorities and security agencies have dismissed the reports as false, describing them as misinformation capable of causing unnecessary fear.
The principal of St. James Grammar School, Afuze, Mr. Ayo Musa, denied any attack on the school and urged the public to disregard the claims.
“There was not even a strange face that would warrant the alleged invasion of the school by suspected kidnappers. It is quite unfortunate that people are spreading false information,” Musa stated.
The Edo State Police Command also confirmed that there was no record of any school kidnapping incident in the affected areas. Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem disclosed that a suspect had been arrested for allegedly spreading the false information.
“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that the report is false, misleading and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents. There was no incident of school children being kidnapped in the mentioned areas or any other part of Edo State,” Ikoedem said.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, reassured residents that security measures around schools and vulnerable locations were already in place.
“Parents, guardians, school administrators and students are therefore advised to go about their lawful activities without fear, as adequate security measures remain in place to guarantee their safety,” he added.
The Police Command warned that individuals found deliberately spreading false security information would face legal action.
Authorities also encouraged residents to always verify sensitive information through official channels before sharing, especially issues relating to public safety and security.
