The Osun State Government has declared every Thursday as Environmental Sanitation Day, directing business owners and other affected residents to participate in a compulsory cleaning exercise from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

The directive takes immediate effect and was announced by the State Head of Service and Chairman of the Environmental Sanitation Task Force, Samuel Ayanleye Aina.

Under the new arrangement, traders, shop owners, artisans, operators of shopping malls, office workers and other business operators are expected to be present at their premises during the designated hours to clean their surroundings.

The state government explained that the initiative is designed to promote environmental cleanliness, discourage indiscriminate refuse disposal and improve compliance with existing environmental regulations.

It urged residents and business operators to take responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings, particularly around markets, shops, offices and other commercial premises.

The government also clarified that law enforcement officers who may be present during the exercise are expected to support the cleaning operation rather than carry out arrests, according to the announcement.

The weekly sanitation programme is part of the state government’s efforts to improve environmental management and encourage greater public participation in keeping communities clean.

Residents and business operators across Osun State have been urged to cooperate with the authorities and observe the designated sanitation hours every Thursday.
