As political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, a political analyst and Director of News and Political Editor at Arise Television, Sumner Sambo, has urged opposition parties in Nigeria to improve their strategies and demonstrate stronger political capacity.
Sambo made the call on Monday while appearing as a guest on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he examined the outcome of the recently concluded Ekiti State governorship election and the lessons it holds for Nigeria’s political landscape.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the incumbent Governor Abiodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the election. According to Sambo, the result exposed major weaknesses among opposition parties and raised questions about their preparedness for future contests.
“Judging from the political angle of the election in Ekiti, the opposition didn’t give a very good performance,” Sambo stated.
He explained that opposition parties must do more than make political statements if they hope to compete effectively against the ruling party in the next general election. According to him, strong electoral outcomes depend on effective organisation, grassroots mobilisation, and credible leadership.
“We need to question the facts coming out of the election. What exactly was the opposition doing to the extent that results coming out do not reflect what happened in the 2018 and 2022 elections, which were very much intense?” he asked.
Sambo noted that the Ekiti election should serve as a wake-up call for opposition groups across the country. He argued that political parties must strengthen their internal structures, build stronger relationships with voters, and develop practical solutions to issues affecting citizens.
Political observers believe the comments reflect growing concerns about the ability of opposition parties to challenge established political structures. In many elections, ruling parties often enjoy advantages through stronger networks, resources, and organisational systems.
As the countdown to 2027 continues, Sambo stressed that opposition parties cannot afford to wait until election season before making preparations. He encouraged them to learn from previous elections, avoid internal divisions, and create strategies that can win public confidence.
The analyst’s remarks have added to ongoing debates about the future of Nigerian democracy and whether opposition parties can present a stronger challenge in the next presidential and legislative elections.
