Fear and tension spread across Owo, Ondo State, on Sunday evening after suspected kidnappers attacked the residence of a local pastor, leading to a fierce gun battle with security operatives.
The incident occurred around 7:05 p.m. when a six-man armed gang reportedly stormed the home of Pastor Taiwo Taiwo, Chairman of Ojana New Area, with the intention of abducting him.
The planned operation, however, was unsuccessful after police officers responded swiftly to a distress call and engaged the attackers in a gun duel.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, explained that the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Owo, immediately mobilized a patrol team to the scene after receiving information about the attack.
“At about 7:05 p.m. when the Police received a distress call indicating that a six-man armed kidnapping gang had stormed the residence of Pastor Taiwo Taiwo, Chairman of Ojana New Area, Owo, with the intention of abducting him, the Divisional Police Officer, B Division, Owo, mobilized and led a patrol team to the scene,” the statement read.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the armed criminals, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. The police response forced the attackers to abandon their mission and escape into nearby bushes.
According to the police, the pastor and his family members were rescued safely without injuries.
“The intended victim and his family members were successfully rescued and unharmed and subsequently relocated to a safer location for enhanced security and protection,” DSP Jimoh stated.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing security concerns surrounding kidnapping activities in parts of Ondo State and other areas across the South-West region.
Security observers believe the quick intervention by law enforcement prevented a possible abduction and demonstrated the importance of rapid response mechanisms in tackling criminal activities.
Residents of Owo have commended the police for their prompt action, saying the bravery of the officers helped restore confidence among community members.
However, community leaders have called for increased surveillance, regular patrols, and stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities have assured residents that efforts will continue to protect lives and property while ensuring that criminal elements do not gain control of communities.
