Obasanjo visits Kwankwaso
A recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano State has stirred fresh political discussions, with many observers speculating about its possible implications for the 2027 general elections.
Obasanjo paid a courtesy visit to Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), at his residence in Kano. The former president was received by Kwankwaso alongside the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
The visit was confirmed in a statement issued by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, who described the meeting as a friendly engagement between two long-time political associates.
According to Hassan, “It was a meeting of mutual respect and cordiality, reflecting the longstanding relationship between the two leaders.”
Although the details of their closed-door discussions were not made public, the meeting has generated widespread interest within political circles, with many interpreting it as a possible sign of renewed consultations ahead of the next election cycle.
Kwankwaso and Obasanjo share a long political history. During Obasanjo’s administration between 2003 and 2007, Kwankwaso served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, a period that strengthened their working relationship.
Political analysts believe the timing of the visit is significant, particularly because of Obasanjo’s continued influence in Nigeria’s political landscape and his previous endorsement of NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election.
The former president’s presence in Kano, widely regarded as Kwankwaso’s political stronghold, has further fueled speculation about possible opposition collaboration and strategic alliances ahead of 2027.
While neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso has disclosed the purpose of their private discussions, the symbolic value of the visit has already attracted national attention.
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of the next general elections, many Nigerians will be watching closely to see whether the meeting marks the beginning of broader political realignments or simply reflects the enduring relationship between two influential figures in the country’s democratic journey.
