A political group associated with former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, in Abeokuta South has defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The defection was announced on Wednesday in Abeokuta by the movement’s leader, Moshood Okanlawon Akinleye, popularly known as Americo.

According to a report by DAILY POST, Akinleye said members of the Senator Ibikunle Amosun (SIA) Movement decided to leave the APC after reviewing their experience in the party, which he described as disappointing.

“Our previous experience in the APC was disappointing,” he said. “We have returned to the PDP, which is our political home.”

Akinleye also criticised the APC’s leadership and political direction in Ogun State, alleging that the party had failed to provide purposeful governance and address the aspirations of ordinary citizens.

“The APC in Ogun State lacks direction and has failed to offer the people purposeful leadership,” he stated.

He further accused the party of adopting an approach to politics that did not reflect the interests of the people, although the report did not provide an independent assessment of the allegations.

Explaining the movement’s next political steps, Akinleye said members had resolved to support PDP candidates across different levels of government ahead of the next elections.

“We have resolved to identify with PDP candidates at all levels to form a government for the good of the people,” he said.

The group also pledged to mobilise its members and supporters to campaign for PDP candidates during the 2027 general elections, with particular attention to Abeokuta South.

“We will mobilise our members and supporters to vote for them in 2027,” Akinleye declared.

He added, “We will not vote an outsider to lead the state,” signalling the movement’s intention to support its preferred candidates in the forthcoming electoral contest.

The defection comes as political parties and their supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with defections and alliances likely to shape political calculations in Ogun State.

However, the report did not indicate whether Senator Amosun had personally endorsed the movement’s decision to leave the APC.

The extent to which the development will affect the electoral fortunes of the APC and PDP in Ogun State remains to be seen.
