A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a woman who recently returned from the United Kingdom to attend a wedding in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The fatal crash occurred on Monday evening along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, specifically around the Christopher University axis. According to the spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, the incident happened at about 6 p.m.
The victim was travelling in a white Toyota Camry alongside two other occupants when the driver reportedly rammed into a moving truck. Eyewitness accounts suggest that excessive speed may have been a major factor leading to the collision.
The impact of the crash resulted in the death of one of the female passengers, while the other two occupants—a man and another woman—sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Preliminary findings revealed that the deceased and one of the injured passengers had just arrived from the United Kingdom and were en route from Lagos to Abeokuta for a wedding ceremony at the time of the accident.
Emergency responders transported the injured victims to nearby medical facilities, including Famobis Hospital and Redeemed Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Redeemed Hospital morgue.
The Ogun State traffic agency expressed condolences to the affected families and used the opportunity to caution motorists against reckless driving, particularly excessive speeding, which remains a leading cause of road accidents.
The incident adds to growing concerns about safety along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a major highway that has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent times.
