The Handshake Movement has called on all presidential hopefuls in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Anambra Governor Peter Obi, and ex-Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, to strictly adhere to the party’s constitution and internal guidelines as the 2027 elections approach.
In a statement on Saturday, National Secretary Chinedu Okpalanma stressed that compliance with the party’s rules is key to ensuring fairness, transparency, and unity within the ADC as it positions itself as a credible alternative to challenge President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
The movement expressed concern that individual ambitions among aspirants could create divisions within the party, urging them to prioritize national interest over personal gain.
Highlighting Nigeria’s current challenges—rising insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and weakening institutions—the group noted that public trust in governance has declined. Okpalanma stated, “Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads. For many Nigerians seeking hope, the ADC has begun to emerge as a platform for national renewal. With that opportunity comes a profound responsibility.”
The Handshake Movement emphasized that the ADC presidential primary must be conducted democratically to strengthen the party, restore public confidence, and provide Nigerians with a real political choice. Aspirants were reminded that leadership requires service, sacrifice, and putting the nation above personal ambition.
“To Nigerians,” the statement concluded, “democracy survives when citizens remain vigilant and engaged. The journey to 2027 will demand participation, accountability, and the courage to demand competent leadership. Nigeria deserves strong institutions, credible political alternatives, and accountable governance.”
