The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has rejected the strike declared by the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), assuring students that ongoing examinations will proceed as scheduled.
ASUU UNILAG had earlier directed its members to withdraw their services starting Wednesday following a congress held on Tuesday.
The union said the decision was prompted by what it described as “amputated” salaries for January and February, claiming that lecturers did not receive their full entitlements.
The Chairman of ASUU UNILAG, Prof. Idou Keinde, stated that several components of lecturers’ salaries were not paid. These include the Professorial Allowance, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, and the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics.
Keinde insisted that lecturers would not resume work until the outstanding salary components are fully settled.
UNILAG Management Disagrees
Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, the Head of UNILAG’s Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said the university management had taken note of the union’s declaration but maintained that due process was not followed in announcing the industrial action.
“The Management of the University of Lagos has noted reports circulating in the media that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG Chapter, directed its members to suspend their services over alleged unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances,” the statement said.
She added that despite the disagreement, the university administration has continued engagement with the ASUU executive to resolve the issues raised by the union.
Exams to Continue
The university emphasised that the current semester examinations will continue as scheduled, noting that students are presently at a critical stage of the academic calendar.
According to the management, any disruption could negatively affect students preparing for internships, the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), and admission into the Nigerian Law School.
The statement added that examinations earlier postponed by department heads or faculty deans would be rescheduled accordingly.
“All examinations will continue as scheduled from Thursday, March 12, 2026, and deans are to ensure that necessary arrangements are put in place for the smooth and successful conduct of the examinations,” the statement added.
