Amaechi joins Atiku on ADC Presidential ticket

Nigeria’s political landscape is already beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) unveiling former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate.

The announcement means Amaechi will run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in what the party describes as a “truly national ticket” designed to offer Nigerians an alternative leadership option in the next presidential election.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth groups, women leaders, and representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.

“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is proud to announce that the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the statement read.

According to the party, Amaechi’s emergence reflects the confidence many members have in his leadership abilities and political experience. The ADC noted that he performed strongly during the party’s presidential primary election, where he finished as runner-up and secured broad support from delegates across the federation.

The party described his performance as evidence of his “enduring appeal as one of Nigeria’s most experienced and respected political leaders.”

In presenting the Atiku-Amaechi ticket, the ADC argued that the partnership goes beyond political calculations and represents the coming together of two experienced leaders with the capacity to address the nation’s challenges.

The statement described the duo as “two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development.”

The party also highlighted Amaechi’s extensive record in public service. Before becoming governor, he served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, earning recognition as one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.

As Governor of Rivers State, he oversaw major investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public sector reforms. He later served as Minister of Transportation, where he played a key role in the federal government’s railway modernization initiatives.

“Few political leaders in Nigeria today possess such extensive and balanced experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government,” the ADC stated.

Beyond his experience, the party emphasized Amaechi’s political influence across the South-South region and other parts of Southern Nigeria, describing him as a bridge-builder capable of fostering cooperation across ethnic, regional, and political divides.

“Together, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi embody a truly national ticket – one that bridges regions, generations, and political traditions,” the statement added.

The ADC further argued that the ticket presents Nigerians with a credible alternative at a time when many citizens are seeking solutions to economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and governance challenges.

“At a time when millions of Nigerians are demanding competent leadership, economic revival, job creation, security, and national unity, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket sends a clear message – the ADC is prepared to govern, prepared to unite the nation, and prepared to deliver results,” Abdullahi said.

The party concluded by calling on its members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth organisations, women leaders, and Nigerians from all walks of life to support what it described as a national movement for change.

As political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections, the unveiling of Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate marks a significant development in Nigeria’s political space.
